WITS logoEvery child deserves access to books and caring adult role models. Working in the Schools (WITS) is a literacy non-profit organization that sincerely believes in this mission, and attempts to bridge the growing achievement gap in Chicago by providing students from low-income families 1-on-1 reading partners from an ever-growing volunteer base.

WITS started in 1991 with just two volunteers serving in one Cabrini Green school. Since then, WITS has grown exponentially, and now serves over 2,600 students from kindergarten to eighth grade in 31 Chicago Public Schools by mobilizing over 1,800 dedicated community and corporate volunteers. The WITS staff implements over 135 different literacy programs over the course of the year, which include programs during school hours; after school hours; and as of 2013, summer programming based out of five different Chicago Park District locations.

On Thursday, October 2, 2014, WITS is hosting its annual Back to School Luncheon at the Chicago Cultural Center in the Yates Ballroom (77 East Randolph Street). For more information on this event, or to learn more about the organization, please visit www.witschicago.org or call the WITS main line at 312-269-4514.
